When developing Stronger My Way, the CSP team gave people living with long-term conditions a list of the benefits of strengthening
The participants were asked to rank them in order of which they would find the most motivating.
A cross-section of members from across the profession were given the same list and asked to do the same, ranking them in order of which they believed their patients would be most driven by.
People living with a health condition said the most important to them were those that provided immediate or near-term benefits, such as the ability to feel better (in terms of mood and confidence) and to do more (daily tasks and activities, for instance).
Physiotherapy staff recognised the value of those, but thought it more important to emphasise the longer-term benefits around bone density, preventing future ill-health and avoiding falls.
But it also signposts to the best training available for skills such as behaviour change and shared decision-making, which we know can make a huge difference in making those conversations stick and enabling positive new habits to form.
You may only have one chance to “sell” strengthening to your patient so it’s really important that every message, and even the language you use when delivering that message, has the maximum impact
I’m really struck by the broad offer of the campaign, providing skills, knowledge and resources for members at all stages of their career and in a range of sectors.
There truly are opportunities for all of us to use it to learn and develop, deliver better outcomes for our patients and to promote the profession.
I would encourage you all to take part and help as many people as possible to get stronger, their way.
