A specialist NHS rehabilitation service has been honoured in the prestigious Health Service Journal (HSJ) awards for its work in creating a specialist rehabilitation network where ‘the patient is at the heart of everything they do’.

The Walton Centre Foundation Trust, a neurology hospital in the Liverpool suburb of Fazakerley, won the specialist services redesign category in the HSJ awards in recognition of the creation of the Cheshire and Merseyside Rehabilitation Network.
The network, launched in 2013, brought together health trusts, social care, voluntary and third sector organisations, along with patients and their families, to create one pathway from patients who were most seriously ill to those requiring care in the community.
As a result a single point of contact was introduced in a bid to increase access and ensure all patients received specialist treatment at the earliest opportunity, in the most appropriate setting.
Rachel Morton, a band 7 physio who works at the Walton Centre, said the award was ‘a great acknowledgement and recognition of what the network has been able to achieve’.
‘Now we have streamlined pathways we can make sure patients are getting the right level of care in the right place. And having more support in the community means we can prevent people having to be readmitted.’
Patients benefit from the input of a range of professionals, who the trust says act as a team, with the patient at the heart of everything they do. An impressive 96 per cent of patients said they were satisfied – or very satisfied – with their rehabilitation, added Ms Morton.
