Insights of CSP members are vital to prepare physiotherapy for the challenges ahead

The NHS Long Term Workforce Plan highlights the crucial role allied health professionals (AHPs) will play in meeting the challenges of the next decade.

To rise to this challenge, the physiotherapy profession must be prepared.  

Through the professional body education reform commission, NHS England is funding 12 AHP professional bodies to ensure the future workforce is equipped with the right skills, in the right place, to deliver high-quality care. The CSP is seizing this moment to take a comprehensive look at the supply and staffing of the physiotherapy profession - from education and early career support to workforce planning.   

Your voice is essential 

Members of the physiotherapy profession are at the heart of this work. Through collaboration and feedback, we can ensure that we’re adapting to the future needs of both professionals and patients. Your insights and experiences will guide our direction and ensure the profession remains forward-thinking. 

As part of this broader initiative, the CSP has commissioned three key pieces of insight work, each led by an external partner. Between now and Christmas, there will be several opportunities for members to get involved, including surveys and focus groups. Some of these opportunities are live now.  

Three key areas of focus 

The CSP has identified the three focus areas as key to growing the profession, retaining physiotherapy staff, and developing a workforce representative of the communities it serves.  

Preceptorship – delivered by NHS Elect 

This project seeks to understand how preceptorship is being practiced in the physiotherapy profession throughout the UK.  We are particularly interested in hearing what resources could have increased your confidence during key moments of career transition.  The findings will help us develop physiotherapy-specific resources to improve early career support – in the NHS and among private sector providers. 

Degree apprenticeships – delivered by Skills for Health 

This project explores how physiotherapy degree apprenticeships are delivered, implemented, and experienced across member, system, and policy levels.  Our aim is to identify areas for improvement and provide recommendations that support the sustainability and quality of this education model.  

Workforce planning – delivered by Skills for Health 

This project aims to understand how physiotherapy is included in workforce assessments and strategies at both employer and regional levels. We also seek to capture the perspectives of physiotherapy leaders and managers in England, Scotland, and Wales to ensure the profession's voice is represented in workforce planning efforts.
