A new level-4 apprenticeship for Wales, which the CSP has helped to develop, is set to become available later this year.
The Therapies Assistant Practitioner (TAP) apprenticeship, announced by Health Education Improvement Wales, is open to people working in physiotherapy, as well as other disciplines including dietetics, occupational therapy, orthotics, podiatry, and speech and language therapy. Its modules are also designed to be relevant for those support staff working in more than professional area.
The apprenticeship will give people working in a range of level-4 TAP roles new skills and learning, as well as preparing them for future employment and career progression within the health sector.
CSP professional advisor Shan Aguilar-Stone and Helen Allendale, former chair of the Wales Physiotherapy Leaders Advisory Group, were both involved with the development of the apprenticeship and provided feedback throughout.
Fiona Jenkins, director of therapies and health sciences at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, commented: ‘The directors of therapies and health sciences in Wales are really pleased to see these frameworks to help develop our non-registrant support workforce.
‘We really value our assistants and support staff and are delighted to have a structured education framework for them.’
Shan Aguilar-Stone said, ‘The CSP has long recognised that support workers are a growing part of the healthcare workforce, and has developed extensive resources to widen awareness and support their development needs.’
