South Tees Integrated Falls Prevention Strategy

South Tees has had a CCG commissioned falls service since 2007 and has had significant year on year growth in referral rates. Despite this, the team have operated on the same resource and the service had become reactive rather than proactive.

Proposed key outcomes of the review were: A mapping exercise of existing services against NICE guidance was used to identify areas for improvement which created an opportunity to review the current service with a view to develop a system-wide approach to falls prevention.

Testing models of Integrated working in acute hospital wards to scope models of healthcare for the future.

With a national picture of a shortfall of qualified nurses and continued NHS cost improvements, Sheffield teaching hospitals wanted to test using Integrated wards to scope new models of healthcare for the future. Aiming to be cost efficient, whilst delivering high quality care to patients and creating an improved working environment for staff. The project looked for ways to share skills and work more closely between the therapy and nursing professions, to avoid duplication, deliver the care patients need in a timely way and optimise time for each Profession to give their expertise to the patients who need it.

Interprofessional education for practice: moving and handling for people with complex needs in contemporary healthcare.

Obesity is a growing problem in the UK affecting all areas of the NHS, with over a quarter of all adults falling into this category. The additional risks and co-mobidities that obesity is linked with leads to a high number of hospital admissions.

The multidisciplinary teams working with these people require appropriate knowledge and skills to deliver safe and effective care, with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (2014) recommending that staff be appropriately trained to use specialist equipment when working with this complex group of people.

Research has shown that interprofessional team working can play an important part in improving patient safety. This report details the process an interprofessional team have undertaken to develop a simulated bariatric scenario as part of the learning materials that complement practical moving and handling sessions for undergraduate students.

Critter Quest: An Inclusive Physical Activity App for Children

The current paediatric population are not reaching targeted government's guidelines of physical activity. This can lead to serious implications to children's health and wellbeing. Furthermore children with chronic health conditions and/or impairments participate in activity less than the general population. Activity apps have been shown to support positive behavioural change. Although many apps exist, promoting physical activity, an opportunity to design an app inclusive and accessible for children with challenging health conditions and disabilities was identified. The aims of this study were:  

  • To design an app that parents and children would use that promotes inclusive physical activity.
  • To evaluate the feasibility of using the app.
  • To use feedback and demand from users to make adjustments to app functionality prior to public release.

Engaging public and patients to develop a website to assist people to remain in or return to work.

Musculoskeletal conditions are the second biggest cause of absenteeism in the UK representing 28.2 million working days lost per annum. Current literature suggests that work issues are generally insufficiently addressed in primary healthcare and there is little evidence that evaluates any existing workplace interventions in this setting.

To address this issue locally, North West Boroughs Healthcare Physiotherapy Service is developing a new work and health pathway, 'Work Wise', to assist patients to remain in or return to work. An element of the pathway is the development of a website to provide accessible supportive resources and signposting material.

To inform website design and content we have undertaken extensive engagement with patients, public and employers and we wish to present our findings to assist the development of other initiatives in this important area.

Recorded Physiotherapy Webinars: Innovative provision of CPD to Physiotherapists working in busy independent sector, MSK clinical environments.

The purpose of this service evaluation was to help better understand the impact and value of running a Recorded Physiotherapy Webinar (RPW) programme to Nuffield Health Physiotherapists.

RPW's are a series of 20-40 minute presentations recorded with both visuals (PowerPoint) and audio (presenter's voice). They are delivered by subject matter experts from across Nuffield Health and aim to promote learning on clinical topics (i.e. ACL rehabilitation, Shoulder red-flags and Cervicogenic headaches).

A total of 14 self-selected RPW's are currently available and can be accessed from anywhere, at any time after the recording via a Learning Management System (LMS).

Move, Groove Improve Quality Improvement Project

The purpose of this project was to reduce the effects of deconditioning and promote functional independence on an elderly care ward, with the ethos inspired by the End Pj Paralysis campaign. The first aim was for over 55% of patients to be sitting out daily for lunch on the ward. The aim was also for over 20% of patients to be wearing their own clothes daily on the ward. Secondary aims including improving patient experience, increasing staff knowledge on deconditioning and maintaining and reducing length of stay.

Contributing to service development and enhancing patient care through the establishment of a balance class

The requirement for a balance exercise class was identified whilst working in a musculoskeletal clinic that receives many referrals for patients who attend with balance deficit. We needed a class that would allow patients to improve upon confidence, mobility, functional balance and lower limb strength whilst being fun and augmenting individual Physiotherapy care. This class would also free up the popular assistant rehabilitation clinics.

Assessing the impact of Physiotherapy Training on Emotional Wellbeing.

1 in 4 people experience mental health problems in any given year, 1 in 6 experience work related stress, depression or anxiety. Only 25% of those experiencing emotional distress seek and receive treatment, with many being dependent on the informal support of family or colleagues.

Physiotherapists are also encouraged to investigate Biopsychosocial issues with their patients, through management of persistent pain conditions and may not feel equipped to successfully interpret or manage the information that they receive from the patient. This additional stress can also impact on the Physiotherapists emotional wellbeing and have an impact on patient care.

The aim of this project was to ensure that all Physiotherapists have an appropriate level of emotional literacy so that they are able read/notice the signs of emotional distress in themselves and others and then act appropriately to support themself and others.
